🧠 Fun Facts 🦃 Thanksgiving didn’t start with turkey, football, and Amazon panic-buying.
Imagine England in the 1500s. No Netflix, no DoorDash, and a major religious shake-up.
In 1534, King Henry VIII basically rage-quit the Catholic Church and made his own version, the Church of England. And the journey to Thanksgiving began…
Breaking away from the official church was illegal. Like trying to stream a movie on a flight before the Wi-Fi actually connects. So those who wanted to leave, the Separatists, bounced to the Netherlands for safety.
After 12 years, they decided it was time to move again, probably saying something like:
“We want a place where we can worship freely AND get a fresh start. Also somewhere the rent won’t randomly double.”
So, in September 1620, 102 passengers boarded the Mayflower.
Some were Separatists; others were just looking for opportunity. Basically the 17th-century version of moving to America to “see what happens.”
They headed to America. It began in 1621, when the Pilgrims (formerly known as Separatists), who absolutely would’ve texted “We made it to America safe 🙌” if they’d had Wi-Fi; arrived after a rough 66-day boat ride.
They weren’t originally headed for New England (think: GPS rerouting), but storms pushed them off course. Their first winter was brutal, and only about half survived. 😳
Then came Squanto and the Wampanoag people (Native Americans, formerly known as Indians) who stepped in like the ultimate “community support team.” Teaching them how to grow corn and actually live on the land. Think Amazon Prime free next day shipping of corn.
By fall, the Pilgrims harvested their first crops and threw a three-day feast. No turkey. No stuffing. Just venison, seafood, cornbread, and porridge. A very 1600s “farm-to-table” situation.
They gave thanks for survival, new allies, and making it through a year that would’ve broken most of us (even with modern coffee).
And that moment of gratitude eventually became the Thanksgiving we celebrate today.
Abraham Lincoln wouldn’t make Thanksgiving a national holiday until 1863.
Because apparently it took 242 years for someone to say, “Hey, maybe we should do this every year.”
Happy Thanksgiving!

TopSlate voted for meals in pill form. And she wrote, “I say this every day at my house. Deciding what to have for dinner, shopping for it, cooking it, and then cleaning it up is not fun. It’s a never-ending chore And I remember my mom saying it too. And I expect my son to say it some day as well.”
